How Long Does Solar Installation Take in New Mexico? A Step-by-Step Timeline

One of the most common hesitations we hear from homeowners considering solar is a version of: “I don’t want this to drag on for months.” It’s a fair concern — and one we’re happy to put to rest with real numbers.

Here’s exactly how long solar installation takes in New Mexico, broken down step by step — and what you should actually expect from signing to the moment your system turns on.

The Short Answer

The physical installation of your solar system on your roof typically takes 1–2 days. The full timeline from signing your contract to your system being live — including permitting, inspections, and utility approval — is usually 4–8 weeks for most New Mexico homeowners.

Here’s why it takes longer than just the install day, and what’s happening at each step.

Step-by-Step: The SunState Solar Timeline

Step 1: Free Consultation (Day 1)

Your timeline starts with a free consultation — either at your home or via phone/video. We review your electric bills, assess your roof via satellite, and discuss your goals. By the end, you’ll have a system recommendation and a clear price. This step is entirely in your hands — the faster you decide, the faster everything moves.

Step 2: Site Survey (Days 3–7 after signing)

After you sign, we schedule a site survey — typically within the first week. One of our technicians visits your home to physically confirm roof measurements, assess structural integrity, document your electrical panel, and take photos for the permit application. This visit takes about an hour.

Step 3: System Design (Days 5–10)

Our design team uses the site survey data to create your final system layout — exact panel placement, string configuration, wiring routes, and inverter location. This design goes into your permit application and is what the inspector will review.

Step 4: Permit Application (Days 7–21)

This is usually the longest step, and it’s almost entirely out of our hands — permit processing time is set by your local jurisdiction. Here’s what to expect by area:

Jurisdiction
Typical Permit Timeline
Albuquerque (City)
1–3 weeks
Bernalillo County
1–2 weeks
Rio Rancho
2–3 weeks
Santa Fe (City
4-8 weeks
Santa Fe County
3-6 weeks
Other NM counties
1–4 weeks

SunState Solar submits all permit applications and follows up proactively. We’ve built relationships with local building departments across New Mexico that help move things along.

Step 5: Installation Day(s) (1–2 Days)

Once permits are approved, we schedule your installation — typically within 1–2 weeks of permit approval. On installation day, our crew arrives in the morning and works through the day to:

  • Install the roof mounting hardware and racking
  • Place and secure all solar panels
  • Run conduit and wiring from panels to inverter
  • Install the inverter and connect to your electrical panel
  • Install any battery backup equipment (if applicable)

Most residential installations are complete in a single day. Larger systems or more complex roofs may require a second day.

Step 6: City/County Inspection (Days 3–10 after installation)

After installation, the local building inspector reviews the work before the system can be activated. SunState Solar schedules this inspection and is present for it. Our jobs consistently receive first-time approval from inspectors — we don’t cut corners on the install.

Step 7: Utility Interconnection (Days 5–14 after inspection)

The final step before activation is PNM (or your utility) approving the grid connection and installing a new production meter if required. This is a utility-controlled process — SunState manages all the paperwork and communication with PNM on your behalf.

Step 8: System Activation — You’re Live

Once PNM issues Permission to Operate (PTO), your system is activated and you’re generating solar power. We walk you through the monitoring app, confirm everything is functioning correctly, and you start seeing your electric bill drop.

What Can Make It Take Longer?

A few factors can push the timeline past 8 weeks:

  • Permit backlogs — Santa Fe city permits can occasionally run 4–5 weeks
  • Roof repair needed — If your roof requires work before installation, that adds time (SunState also offers roofing services)
  • Electrical panel upgrade — If your panel is too small or outdated, an upgrade is required before installation
  • HOA approval — If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, some require prior approval for solar installations (federal law limits their ability to deny solar, but the approval process adds time)

SunState Solar identifies all of these factors during the site survey so there are no surprises.
