This very hands-on engineer gives Sun State Solar 5 stars and a hearty recommendation! After a lot of study, I finally committed to my first home solar system. I chose Sun State after finding they were close by and after paying them a visit. I found a 'boutique' level of installer, not too big, not too small, with great reviews. We wanted a battery-backup solar system, because what's the point of investing in solar if you can't get power from your solar system if the power is off? With energy storage in batteries, our system will kick over to the house being powered by the batteries and the inverter... in milliseconds.By adding batteries, the requirements of and scrutiny by PNM increased. Sun State dealt patiently with them, even when they were sometimes being unreasonable. We had a very good system design, but were forced fall back on a system that PNM was more familiar with. Both good systems, so it worked out.Regarding system design, I chose 'whole-house' over 'critical-load.' The two options are wired differently. The latter would have required a third breaker panel on top of my existing two. Also, with my electrical experience, I wanted to manage battery-solar loads myself, either by not using certain appliances, or by turning off breakers so they can't be used.A method I have used before is to put a black dot with a Sharpie by every breaker that represents a minimum capability when the power goes off. That way I can shut off everything but the minimum critical loads in a power-down situation, then later add or subtract loads as desired.PNM required a separate recording meter, but that turned out to be a nice feature as it counts up the solar system's kWh contribution and display's that separately, grid up or down. We're pleased with the hardware we ended up with: Solar Edge inverter, Solar Edge automatic disconnect, and Solar Edge batteries. High quality, not 'budget', hardware. The Solar Edge app is also very good at collecting and displaying data, and providing alerts. When the Bernalillo County inspector came, I was there both times, and he said when I said, "These guys are good!", "Yes, they did a really nice job."Photos of roof hardware, panel array, etc, not provided so as to not disclose location.
